A Serene Submergence
Design Intent :
Nestled on a steep, tea plantation-covered site in Wellington, Coonoor, this residence embodies the "house below" concept. Its living spaces are intentionally set lower than the road, creating a seamless connection to the surrounding landscape. This design ensures that upon entry, the house immediately unveils the site's scenic views, with the terrace transforming into a prime viewing pavilion.
The home masterfully utilizes its sloped terrain, unfolding across three functional levels: an arrival and viewing pavilion on Level 1 (Upper); the main living areas (living, dining, kitchen, and master bedroom) on Level 2 (Mid), extending to a garden; and Level 3 (Lower Most) dedicated to guest bedrooms and entertainment zones, opening directly onto a productive vegetable garden.
The transparent, semi-covered verandah serves as a strategic architectural extension, seamlessly integrating interior living spaces with the external environment. It directly overlooks a private, landscaped lawn, characterized by its lush vegetation and Vibrant landscape. Functionally, this verandah is a versatile transitional zone. During morning hours, it facilitates activities such as casual dining (e.g., coffee consumption, newspaper reading, warming up in the sun) and Gardening. This space also functions as an informal social interactions and Reception of guests.
The study, positioned at the corner, offers unparalleled 360-degree views of the surrounding terrain, transforming it from a mere workspace into a serene observation point deeply connected to the environment.
